Trudeau said that he will stay on as Prime Minister until a new leader is chosen.
Prime Minister Trudeau said
"This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election."
He went on to say, "Last night over dinner, I told my kids about the decision I'm sharing with you today"
Trudeau advised that he had met with Governor General,Mary Simon this morning where he asked for prorogation of Parliament, until March 24, 2025.
The Governor General supported his request, which ends the longest minority Parliament sitting in Canadian history.
Trudeau also said he asked the President of the Liberal Party of Canada to begin the process of finding a new leader as soon as possible.
The resignation of Prime Minister Trudeau follows a very turbulent fall sitting of Parliament which triggered the stormy end of Trudeau's historic political tenure, one marked by both major social policy change, as well as controversy and varying support of the Canadian public.
When asked ,why now?, Trudeau indicated that the ineffectiveness in overcoming internal battles within the Liberal party was a major reason for his decision.
Trudeau answered,
"As you all know, I'm a fighter. Every bone in my body has always told me to fight… I care deeply about this country.
I truly feel that removing the contention around my own continued leadership is an opportunity to bring the temperature down, and have a government that will focus on the complex issues that are coming forward in the coming months."
